10,000 worth of art grants!

Thanks to the success of SeaCompression 2009, Ignition Northwest is able to direct $10,000 back to the arts community in the form of art grants for Critical Massive 2010.

Introduction

And now, a few words from the INW Art Grant Committee Chair ...

I'm pleased to announce the details of the Critical Massive 2010 Art Grant application process. There is a lot of information here, so please read through this entire document.

Critical Massive is a multi-day regional event sponsored each year by Ignition Northwest as a venue for community members and friends to meet and develop collaborative relationships through the creation and experience of music, art, interactive projects, and workshops.

Critical Massive strives to be the Northwest's premier pre-playa experience and therefore welcomes the idea of providing grants for art centered in the Northwest. This grant process is open to on and off playa art, the only restriction being that all or a completed significant portion of the project must be displayed at Critical Massive 2010. Please note the grant is intended to be assistive, covering materials and costs of installation, not artists' time.

About the Grants

This year the Ignition Northwest Art Committee is pleased to offer our standard art grants and microgrants as well as a new category of Refurb Art Grants.

NEW WORKS

*Intended for larger pieces, typically sculptural, interactive or both, but we're open to hearing the creative ideas you have. Art grant awards are capped at 20% of the entire art grant budget. This year, the per-project cap will be $1600. Please keep this in mind as you develop the budget for your project.

REFURBS

*Refurb Art Grants are intended to support the renewal and exhibition of existing Works at Critical Massive by providing awards for minor repairs, fueling flame effects and/or transportation to Critical Massive. Maximum award for Refurb Art Grants is $200.

MICROGRANTS

*Microgrants, capped at $100, are intended to encourage art throughout the event in ways not typically thought of for art grants. Umbrella Favela (from CM'08) is a delightful example of the kind of project we're interested in for microgrants: inexpensive, with high wow factor.

Application Criteria

Before submitting an art grant request, please note the following criteria that will be used as guidelines as the Art Grant Committee reviews applications.

The Critical Massive 2010 Art Grant Committee:

  • Will give priority to projects that demonstrate ability to complete by the event (via thoroughness of application).

  • Does not fund sound systems. All requests for sound installations must be coordinated through the event producers or their designate.

  • Does not fund workshops or performances. All requests for workshops and performances must be coordinated through the event producers or their designate.

The following points from the introduction bear emphasis:

  • Art grant awards are intended to be assistive, covering materials and costs of installation, not artists' time or outside labor costs.

  • Art grant awards are capped at 20% of the overall grant budget. Please keep this in mind as you develop project budget, and plan accordingly if your project is going to be significantly more expensive. Let us know what other funding sources you anticipate using.
