Critical Massive is, at its heart, a group of enthusiastic people with lots of passion coming together to create an event that serves and celebrates our community. And not one of them, from the Producer, to the Team Leads, to the many crew members get paid for it! That's right! All of them volunteer crazy amounts of their time to bring forth this crazy, wonderful happening. And you can be one of them by joining one of our teams to help before, during and after the event. Below are basic descriptions for teams needed for CM MMX. Have a look to see what job best suits you!
Thanks for your interest! Volunteer registration has closed. If you'd like to volunteer at the event, your best bet is to speak to the greeters gate and / or Hub staff, and check the info board at the Hub for opportunities.
Department of Public Works (DPW)
The DPW crew is legendary and you can get in on the action. With DPW you'll:
- Build, Run and Tear-down Event Infrastructure
- Provide Transportation of Event Infrastructure
- Physical Surveillance and Marking of the Event Site
- Provide STRIKE services "last burners out"
- On-site Before and After the Actual Event
Fire Council
Fire is a large part of any Critical Massive and the Fire Councils duty is to oversee these three main components: Safety, Performance/Production and a Burn Engineer (the construction of the CM MMX totem). If you have an interest in pyro-technique (I just made that word up!), this crew is for you.
(Performers, are encouraged to share their ideas for performances & workshops.)
Medical Services
Emergency Services provides several different key areas of service; these services include Fire Fighting, Rescue, Hazardous Materials, Emergency and Non-Emergency Medical evaluation and treatment, Mental Health services (including sexual assault response), and 911 Dispatch. ES is looking for skilled professionals from all areas of emergency services.
Duct Tape
This new(ish) team starts where DPW falls down dead drunk during the event. We need a small group of handy persons who can wield a power tool (or a hammer) to help fix anything that breaks during the event. DPW hauls the stuff in and out. Duct Tape keeps it standing till then. You should have some basic repair skills and maybe some tools of your own.
Rangers
(Requires at least one year of having attended the event)
Rangers are community mediators who, through non-violent communication, address potentially dangerous situations from heat strokes to fire hazards. They interact with the community to ensure that participants remain safe. Also, most of them wear utili-kilts!
Space Crew
The Space Crew handles the figuring out the logistics and layout of the event - who/what goes where - and how do we make it pretty? As part of this crew you will help:
- Design Layout / Flow of Event Site
- Design Event Signage
- Decorate Event Sight and Help Make The Hub Home
Stage Management crew
Help organize and manage talent on the Hub stage:
- Create production schedules for The Hub stage, providing for any necessary setup and takedown
- Wrangle talent
- Keep any gear/equipment/props organized and safely out of the way when not in use
- Be willing to hang out at The Hub to help with stage management during sets
- Advertise how AWESOME The Hub shows are gonna be.
Sound Crew
This years Sound Crew is employing a two-pronged attack - Tech and Bookings. The Tech crew will:
- Run The Hub Stage
- Lug & Setup Sound Gear
- Manage Event Sound
- Work with Sound Camps
Greeters
Greeters are the open arms and smiling face of every Critical Massive, setting the tone of the event for each and every person coming through the front gates. Using humor, affection, disarming sexiness and a near-encyclopedic knowledge of who, what, where, and when, Greeters ensure that everyone entering the gates has the latest and most accurate information needed to have a great event.
Practically speaking, Greeters will:
- Welcome Everyone Who Comes Through the Gate
- Take Participant's Tickets
- Collect and Keep Secure Event Waivers
- Give Away the Schwag!
- Relay 'critical' information to incoming participants
The Hub
Info, Coffee, and Ice - The Center of our Universe!
This is a new team we started last year. Hub duties include manning the Hub and overseeing several aspects:
- Selling ice. It'll be July, so you'll be the coolest kids in camp.
- Making sure that coffee supplies are available for people to make pots o' java
- Access to the Hub First Aid kit
- Knowing how the Information Boards work so you can explain how it works to community members.
- Lost & Found
A great opportunity for newbies and people who like being in the center of it all. Bring your ideas for other things Hub Caps could do!
Emerald Crew
The Emerald Cru is all about creative ways to 'Leave No Trace' in every environment - from Black Rock to Mt. Vernon. The CM MMX Emerald Cru is providing pre-event information to help make our burn "green" through and through. Our primary goal is to have the land happy and our sweep crew bored at the end of our event.
If you would like to help, here are some ways:
- Emerald Cru volunteers for during the event, as well as a team that can stay late Sunday evening after packing up to work with DPW to do final moop sweep.
- Be pro-active in preparing your camp to Leave No Trace; contact FireHorse for ideas and resources to help with this.
- Participate in random Moop Sweeps during the event.
- Bring and use only Dr. Bronner's soap for all your washing (this is not an advertisement, this is just the most friendly soap most of us can lay hands on)
- Leave LARC as good or better than we found it!
Exodus / Parking
We are looking for a few good hands to be yin to the Greeters yang. In conjunction with the Space Crew, Exodus/parking will design and implement both a parking and an Exodus plan focusing on traffic flow and the avoidance of bottle-necking.
At the beginning of the event, the Exodus/Parking team will pick up where the Greeters leave off directing participants to acceptable parking spaces. At the end of the week, they'll lovingly help participants drive back into the real world with as little drama and mishaps as possible.
Workshops
Have a passion? A skill? A talent? Want to share it with the community? Have an unfinished project that could use some extra hands? Then give the GIFT of KNOWLEDGE by conducting a workshop or teaching class. Check out the Workshops page for great workshop ideas and registration info.
