Seattle Mini Maker FaireGroovik's Cube (2010)![]() Groovik's Cube is a large-scale arts and technology project most of whose team live in the Seattle area and are Ignition NW members. With a large scale structure made from re-usable scaffolding and recycled materials, and a large number of custom electronics components driven by custom developed software, Groovik's cube is not only an entertaining piece of large scale art, it represents the values and skills of large segments of our community. The cube is a large scale (15'x15'x15'), functional Rubik's Cube whose motion is simulated by 648 superbright LEDs which light the cube from the inside. The motion of the lights is accompanied by the sound of gears and mechanical clicking. The entire process is controlled by 3 separate controllers, and three participants must work together to solve the cube. The first installation of the cube will be at the Burning Man Festival of Arts and Culture, and then the cube and its technology components will be exhibited at art events in the Northwest over the following year. Rainier Vista Central Park (2008)Central Park at Rainier Vista Housing Community was slated by the Seattle Housing Authority (SHA) to become the focal point of this newly renovated and diverse neighborhood. Due to unavoidable increases in infrastructure and construction, as well as an initial cost delay, SHA was unable to dedicate sufficient funds to complete the project. The fiscally abandoned Central Park, now wrapped in hurricane fencing, has been taken under the wing of Neighborhood House, which has joined with the landowner, SHA, and over 15 community and neighborhood groups to work to complete this project. "Ignition Northwest worked with Neighborhood House to gather input, design and create public art for the Rainer Vista Central Park. by engaging members of the Rainier Vista Community!" In the news:
B/ IAS: Burien Interim Arts Space (2008)Ignition Northwest sponsored B/ IAS, the Burien/ Interim Art Space. B/ IAS was a year-long experiment that combined and transformed the concepts of art, temporary green spaces, and community gathering. The Interim Art Space at Burien's Town Square displayed Burien's first major temporary art piece, "The Passage," a sculpture depicting a mother and child walking together to share and explore life. This artwork was first created by Dan Das Mann and Karen Cusolito for the 2005 Burning Man Arts Festival. The figures stand a dramatic 30' and 20' tall and were fabricated out of recycled and scrap metal. Learn more at the B/ IAS website. In the news:
