Pratt Fine Arts Center Scholarship

Pratt Fine Arts Center Scholarship 2011-2012

Ignition Northwest's Pratt Art Scholarship is offered once per calendar year. The program grants one member of Ignition Northwest with the opportunity to take a year of study at the Pratt Fine Arts Center. Each scholarship cycle includes Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer quarters.

Scholarship recipients may take up to $1,500 in courses, workshops and/or studio time, and may study any subject offered by Pratt, either in pursuit of specific projects or merely to learn new skills. Previous recipients have studied subjects such as clay sculpting, stone carving, figure sculpting, drawing, and painting.

The chief requirement for the Ignition Northwest Pratt Scholarship is a passion for making art! (Other, less interesting requirements are listed below.)

Origins of the Program

Ignition Northwest’s Pratt Fine Arts Scholarship came into being through the vision and dedication of Board Member Stuart Updegrave (2007-2010).

Stuart had had good personal experiences taking welding and forging classes at Pratt prior to his election. Upon deciding to run for the INW board he decided that, if elected, he would find ways to increase opportunities for making art in the Seattle and Pacific Northwest Burning Man community.

After winning a spot on the Board, Stuart spent a year exploring ideas to offer quarterly scholarships for a single course directly to community members. He partnered up with INW Community members Mary Saucier and James (Jamie) Salay who had expressed interest in helping develop the scholarship. It was Jamie, a Pratt instructor, who was able to help connect Stuart with Pratt staff where it became clear that partnering directly with Pratt to offer a yearly (3-4 quarters) scholarship would be the most effective method of providing this opportunity.

Stuart considers the Pratt Scholarship his proudest achievement from his time on the board, and is delighted that it will continue into the future.
